APLINGTON, Iowa — A former Aplington volunteer EMT and fire chief died Saturday in a vehicle crash west of Aplington.

Keith Dale Oelmann, 59, died after his car went off a bridge and rolled on a rural highway west of Austinville in Butler County early Saturday.

Oelmann was a former chief and longtime firefighter and EMT with the Aplington Fire Department. The Aplington Fire Department responded to the accident call in Butler County.

Scott Poppen, Aplington fire chief, joined the department about when Oelmann left, he said. Poppen said rescue crews didn’t realize it was Olemann involved in the crash until they recovered him from the scene.

“From what we could tell, he went off the road, off a bridge and the vehicle rolled,” Poppen said.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crash. An official accident report was not avialable Saturday.

A funeral home for Oelmann will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Reformed Church in Aplington.
