LINCOLN, Neb. — The former Southeast Rural Fire Department chief who stole thousands of dollars from his department from 2010 to 2013 was sent to prison Thursday.

Lancaster County District Judge Steven Burns sentenced John Porter, 47, to three to four years in prison for felony theft and an additional year in prison for attempted possession of a firearm by a felon.

Neither Porter nor his attorney, Peter Blakeslee, made statements before Burns handed down his sentence. More than 15 firefighters from the volunteer department watched as Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies put Porter in handcuffs and took him away.
