LODD: W.Va. fire chief dies of heart attack

Chief George Underwood, 64, was on a call working to unblock a culvert when he collapsed and died.

LAKE, W.Va. — A volunteer fire chief died Thursday evening after suffering an apparent heart attack.

West Virginia Metro News reported that Chief George Underwood, 64, with the Lake Volunteer Fire Department, received a call Thursday night that a culvert was blocked along a road.

Chief Underwood took a tanker from the fire department and attempted to use a hose line to unblock the culvert when he apparently collapsed and died, according to the report. He was alone at the time.

Chief Underwood not only led the fire department, but also ran the Lake Community Center, according to the report.

He was a 1968 graduate of Logan High School where he was a standout athlete. Southern West Virginia wrestling fans may also remember Underwood as the “Cuban Assassin,” according to the report.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
