MONTGOMERY, Mass. — A fire chief died Tuesday after collapsing while battling a house fire.
Boston Globe reported that Montgomery Fire Department Chief Stephen Frye, 59, responded to the 2-alarm house fire and collapsed while operating “the initial attack line outside in the rear of the building,” according to a statement from the state Department of Fire Services.
Chief Frye, a 24-year fire veteran, was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“The small, close-knit fire department is devastated by the loss of the member, as is the entire community of Montgomery and the area first responders,” the statement said. “A Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team will be assisting department members.”
