CENTENNIAL, Colo. — A South Metro Fire Rescue firefighter has died after a battle with cancer.

Anthony Palato was diagnosed with an occupational cancerous tumor in 2017, 9 News reported. He went into remission a few years ago, but the cancer returned. Palato died early Wednesday morning.

“As a paramedic for 21 years, there is no doubt that Tony touched many lives and will be remembered as a kind, caring and compassionate person with a true servant’s heart, he will be greatly missed,” a statement from SMFR read.

In honor of Palato, all SMFR facilities will fly flags at half-staff, and badges will be “shrouded until further notice.”
