New Insurance Planning Guide Focuses on Department Sustainability
December 12, 2012
The Volunteer & Combination Officers Section (VCOS) of the International Association of Fire Chiefs is pleased to announce the availability of a new publication. An Insurance Planning Guide for Emergency Service Organizations: Preparing for When Bad Things Happen …To Us (PDF), is a free resource to help fire departments navigate the insurance landscape.
The report focuses on understanding a fire department's potential insurance needs that support sustainability in the event of an emergency, be it natural, manufactured or administrative in nature. It addresses protection of all department assets, from buildings and vehicles to data and personnel.
The resource highlights:
- A basic understanding of insurance: what’s available, how it works
- Unique insurance considerations of fire departments
- The relationship between insurance and risk-management principles and continuity-of-operations planning
- Forty potential threats to fire departments and how to insure against them
- Multiple tools to help assess departmental insurance needs
- A state-by-state breakdown on worker’s compensation
“This project is the culmination of more than a year of dedicated effort by a number of VCOS board members, section members and our insurance corporate partners, Provident and VFIS,” said Chief Timothy S. Wall, VCOS chair. “We’re very proud of the report and are confident it will prove an invaluable resource for the fire service for years to come.”
An Insurance Planning Guide for Emergency Service Organizations: Preparing for When Bad Things Happen…To Us (PDF) is now available for download. The guide and other VCOS publications can be found at www.vcos.com > Resources > Publications.
