Training center dedicated to late firefighter in Ill.

The center, the first of its kind in Illinois, will be regional base for a coalition of emergency response personnel

HOMEWOOD, Ill. — The Homewood Fire Department dedicated a building Sunday that is named for a firefighter who died trying to save a man in a burning home — the Brian Carey Training Center.

"We thought there was no more noble [act] than naming the training center after him," said Fire Chief Robert Gra-dowski about Carey, a Homewood firefighter who died in March 2010 trying to save an 87-year-old.

Kathleen Carey, fighting back tears, said about her son: "I miss him desperately, but I wake up every morning knowing his name is connected to saving lives."

The center, the first of its kind in Illinois, will serve as the regional base for a coalition of emergency response personnel in south suburban Cook County.
