Prioritizing exposure protection: Go on the offensive

Most in the fire service are familiar with the RECEO-VS acronym, and we even discussed it in a recent column about how a vehicle fire can present exposure hazards.
First developed by Lloyd Layman in 1953, the original acronym, RECEO, stands for the fireground issues that need to be addressed on scene: Rescue, Exposures, Containment, Extinguish and Overhaul. The approach has proven useful right up to current day, particularly with the later addition of the VS – Ventilation and Salvage.
These seven items are to be considered when initiating any fireground operation to ensure crews address the whole gamut of activities.
