Chicago firefighter succumbs to injuries from basement fire

CHICAGO — A Chicago Fire Department lieutenant has died from injuries he received while fighting a house fire on Aug.11.
The department announced that Lieutenant Kevin Ward, 59, died at Loyola Medical Center, WLS reported.
Firefighters responded to a basement fire in the 8300-block of West Balmoral Avenue. During the fire, a mayday was transmitted for three injured firefighters, CBS Chicago reported. Lieutenant Ward was one of the injured and was transported to Loyola Medical Center in serious condition.
Officials said Ward was surrounded by his family when he died. He joined the department in 1996.
